In 2023, the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum Hall of Fame honored Goodman with its lifetime achievement recognition for journalists, the Paul Robbins Award. “With his deep passion for skiing, love of history, and his gift for storytelling, David has inspired countless skiers to make their own tracks in the winter wilderness,” stated the award announcement. “David’s books helped ignite a revival of interest in backcountry skiing and inspired a community-based ski movement in the Northeast.”

Goodman is a three-time winner of the Harold S. Hirsch Award for Excellence in Ski Writing, the highest award of the North American Ski Journalists Association— twice for his magazine writing and once for Classic Backcountry Skiing: A Guide to the Best Ski Tours in New England (AMC, 1989). He is also a recipient of two awards from the International Skiing History Association for his writing on ski history: the 2022 Skade Award for Best Backcountry Skiing in the Northeast and the 1994 Ullr Award for Classic Backcountry Skiing. Goodman is the author of 12 books, including four New York Times bestsellers that he co-authored with his sister, journalist Amy Goodman: The Exception to the Rulers, Static, Standing Up to the Madness, and Democracy Now!

David Goodman is a graduate of Harvard University. His travels have taken him to five continents, but he insists that his favorite place to explore is in his backyard, the mountains of the Northeast. He and his wife, Sue Minter, have two children. They live in Waterbury Center, Vermont.
